Antarctica: The Lost Green World
Millions of years ago, Antarctica was a very different place from the frozen wilderness we know today. Before the continent drifted south and became isolated by powerful ocean currents, it enjoyed a much warmer climate.
Ancient forests once covered large parts of Antarctica. Fossils of trees, ferns, flowering plants, and even pollen have been discovered beneath the ice, revealing a landscape that was once green and thriving with life. During the age of the dinosaurs, Antarctica formed part of the southern supercontinent Gondwana, alongside South America, Africa, Australia, and India.
Scientists believe that rivers flowed across the land, forests stretched to the horizon, and a variety of animals roamed the continent. Although winter darkness still occurred, the climate was mild enough to support abundant plant life.
As the continents drifted apart, Antarctica gradually moved closer to the South Pole. Around 34 million years ago, the formation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current isolated the continent from warmer ocean waters. Temperatures fell, ice sheets expanded, and Antarctica slowly transformed into the frozen world we see today.
Today, beneath kilometres of ice, lie the remains of this lost paradise—a reminder that our planet has changed dramatically throughout its history.

Penguins: Masters of the Frozen South
Penguins are flightless seabirds found almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere. Perfectly adapted to life in and around the ocean, they are excellent swimmers, using their powerful flippers to propel themselves through the water in search of food.
There are 18 species of penguin, ranging from the tiny Little Blue Penguin to the majestic Emperor Penguin, the largest of all penguin species. While many people associate penguins with Antarctica, some species also live on islands and coastlines in South America, Africa, ùh and New Zealand.
Antarctic penguins face some of the harshest conditions on Earth. To survive the freezing temperatures, they rely on a thick layer of blubber, waterproof feathers and close social groups for warmth and protection. Emperor Penguins are particularly remarkable, breeding during the Antarctic winter when temperatures can fall below -40°C.
Penguins feed mainly on fish, krill and squid, and can spend much of their lives at sea. Their streamlined bodies make them superb swimmers, allowing them to dive deep beneath the ice-covered waters of the Southern Ocean.
Although penguins have survived in the Antarctic for millions of years, many species now face challenges from climate change, habitat loss and changes in food availability. Their future depends on the health of the oceans they call home.
With their determination, resilience and unique adaptations, penguins have become one of the most recognisable and beloved symbols of Antarctica's frozen wilderness.

Leopard Seal (Hydrurga leptonyx)
The leopard seal is one of Antarctica's most powerful predators. Growing up to 3.5 metres (11.5 feet) in length, these sleek hunters patrol the icy waters surrounding the continent. Their name comes from the dark spots covering their silvery-grey coats.
Unlike most seals, leopard seals have a varied diet. They feed on fish, squid, krill and even penguins. Their powerful jaws and sharp teeth make them one of the top predators in the Antarctic ecosystem.
Despite their fearsome reputation, leopard seals play an important role in maintaining the balance of marine life. By controlling prey populations, they help keep the Antarctic food web healthy and diverse.

Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus)
The blue whale is the largest animal ever known to have lived on Earth. Even the biggest dinosaurs were smaller. These magnificent giants can grow to over 30 metres (98 feet) in length and weigh as much as 200 tonnes.
Despite their enormous size, blue whales feed mainly on tiny shrimp-like creatures called krill. During feeding season, a single blue whale can consume up to four tonnes of krill every day.
Blue whales are found in oceans around the world, including the rich feeding waters surrounding Antarctica. Their deep, haunting calls can travel hundreds of kilometres underwater, making them among the loudest animals on the planet.
During the 20th century, commercial whaling pushed blue whales close to extinction. Although hunting has largely stopped, their populations remain much lower than they once were. Today they face threats from climate change, ship strikes, ocean noise, and changes to krill populations.

The blue whale is a reminder that the largest creatures are not always the fiercest. Despite its immense size and power, it survives on some of the smallest animals in the ocean.

In Antarctica, some pods have developed remarkable hunting techniques, working together to create waves that wash seals from floating ice.
